Odor From the AC Unit? No Problem!

October 28th, 2010 Comments off

It’s common to have an air conditioner that will give off an unsuspecting – and sometimes just downright foul – odor of sorts. Don’t panic. There’s nothing majorly wrong with your unit.

Odors in air conditioners often times are caused by bacteria or mold. These units have coils that can – and most likely will – grow mold over time because of outdoor moisture. In addition, a unit’s air filter can collect dust to where it will produce a musty smell.

Keep the air ducts clean. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), air ducts should be cleaned regularly in an effort to improve the air quality in your home. The EPA also said ducts should be cleaned if there is visible mold.

The professionals at our Charlotte air conditioning company advise all to frequently replace air filters and keep filters away from dirt build-up. If condensation is visible, use a household cleaner to help clean the air conditioner drain.

“Cure” BLACK MOLD danger

Black mold, a slimy greenish-black substance, is a type of mold that has been linked with serious health risks including infant death caused by respiratory bleeding, and illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis

Virtually every home has mold of some type, somewhere. Invisible mold spores are floating in the air both inside and out looking for a wet place to land and reproduce.

Although all types of mold are not toxic, it’s difficult to distinguish between the toxic and non-toxic without lab testing. That’s why it’s important to treat all molds as if they were potentially harmful.

How can you virtually “cure” the potential for mold-related problems?

We recommend air duct cleaning often and installing an ultraviolet germicidal light as part of your existing heating system to kill and control the live mold spores.

This will control black mold so that you have clean air throughout your home.
